CWO Thiel enrolled at 2563 1H RC(ARMY)CC Petrolia on his 12th Birthday, he was the Regimental Sergeant Major in 2563 Petrolia during the 2015-2016 training year. He had the unique distinction of serving in all 3 1H affiliated Army Cadet Corps located in 2563 Petrolia, 102 Sarnia and 9 London.
September 2016, due to increasing complexities of living in London & Sarnia bi-weekly, CWO Thiel transferred to 9 RC(ARMY)CC London where he was appointed as Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major there from October 2016 to October 2017.
CWO Thiel qualified as both Master Cadet and NSE Level 4.
CWO Thiel was the recipient of numerous 2563 Petrolia unit awards throughout his cadet career. These include Most Outstanding Recruit, Best Red Star, Best Silver Star, Best Gold Star, Best Over All Cadet (2x) and Best Shot (4x).
While he was a Cadet in Petrolia, CWO Thiel was awarded the Army Cadet Long Service Medal, Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence and Lord Strathcona Medal. Additionally, as a Petrolia Cadet, CWO Thiel was awarded the Major General Howard medal, finishing as Ontario’s top Gold Star cadet for the 2014-2015 training year.
CWO Thiel successfully attended 2 week General Training Course, 3 week Basic Expedition Course (finished in top 2 Cadets), 6 week Expedition Instructor Course (interviewed for ANAVETS), 18 day Madawaska Regional Expedition, 6 week Cadet Leadership & Challenge Course (Company Commander for all Battalion Parades and Graduation Parade), the 6 week Outward Bound Scotland Exchange (Parade Commander, Wathgill UK final parade) and a 7 week Staff Cadet (Platoon Warrant Officer) on the Basic Expedition Course. CWO Thiel also staffed many Silver Star EC and Gold Star EC weekends during his last 3 years as a cadet.
On September 7, 2017, CWO Thiel was recognized by Federal Member of Parliament Irene Mathyssen and the House of Commons for his substantial community contributions as a Cadet for Canada’s 150th.
After graduating High School with Honours at University Level in June of 2017. In his 7th year as a Cadet, on October 30th, 2017, CWO Thiel left the Army Cadet Program to pursue a career in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps of the Canadian Armed Forces. He was sworn into the Canadian Armed Forces on November 30, 2017.
